Painter of the 17th century pair of paintings in the style of miniature painting from a 16th Century engraving of Théodore de Bry. REPRESENTATIONS WITH A MOVE OF LANDKNIGHTS AND WARRIORS, LEADED BY A PROGRAMMING FIELD GOACH mixed technique on parchment. 11.5 x 15 cm. Verso, partly taped off blue cardboard with old ink inscription. Behind glass in old frames of the time around 1700. Both depictions show the train in far, in the distance hilly landscape with castles. One of the pictures shows lansquenets accompanied by women with a trailing covered wagon, a young man carrying geese and a woman with a booty sack. It is possible that this is a raid. In contrast, the scenery refers to the concomitant phenomena of the Turkish War: the leader riding ahead next to a camel held by a Turk, followed by prisoners and Turkish figures tied up between lansquenets with halberds. On the right edge of the picture a memento mori motif in the form of a riding skeleton with raised hourglass, accompanied by two other figures with scythe and spear. A conspicuous feature in both pictures is a rooster or a hen on a covered wagon. The pair of paintings in the sense of the historical events of the 17th century of importance. |
