Rectangular box, the base set with a panel of diaper-work engine-turning within vari-colour gold foliate borders, the convex sablé sides applied with scrolling vari-colour gold foliage, the cover set with an enamel plaque depicting the lovers Rinaldo and Armida within foliate gold frame and borders, scroll thumbpiece.
The story of Armida, a Saracen sorceress and Rinaldo, a solder in the First Crusade, was created by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso in the 16th century, and many painters and composers were inspired by Tasso’s tale.
