Micromosaic Rome 1810
	HOUNDS ATTACKING A BOAR A micro mosaic plaque depicting hounds attacking a boar, Rome, circa 1810, in a gilt bronze frame Attributed to Gioacchino Barberi (1772-1857) 15,3 x 20 cm. Note: Gioacchino Barberi is renowned for his expertise at portraying animals. There are several micro mosaic versions depicting this scene of dogs attacking a boar facing left against a river landscape. However, the present example is a rare reverse image, which shows the boar facing right. This phenomenon often occurs when an etching copied from a painting is turned over and printed, resulting in a picture in reverse. A micro mosaic tabletop with a central scene nearly identical to the present example was in the collection of Gianni Versace later sold at Sotheby’s. The present composition is after Johann Wenzel Peter, whose trademark leafy plants can be seen at the lower left. Bibl. Il fournit de nombreux modèles à ces derniers et en réservait l'exclusivité à certains, comme au célèbre Giacomo Raffaelli : une lettre qu'il lui adressa mentionne plusieurs versions de la "Chasse au sanglier", variant selon le nombre de chiens représentés.
